(Spirit Lake)– Thursday’s announcement by Governor Kim Reynolds to extend an emergency medical disaster proclamation originally issued March 19th will push back further the late penalty on property tax payments. That is now extended to April 30th, 2020.
Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley reminds property owners payments must be postmarked by that, paid online at www.IowaTaxAndTags.org by April 30th, 2020, or dropped off in the Dickinson County Treasurer’s drop box outside the courthouse, here again by April 30th, 2020 to avoid a late penalty. She says payments can also be called into the office.
Most driver’s license and motor vehicle deadlines have also been extended through a State of Public Health Emergency Proclamation issued by the Governor March 17th, which was backdated to March 16th, 2020.
Rowley also reminds those with a driver’s license that has an expiration date of January 16th, 2020, or later, that they do not have to renew them at this time. She says they will remain valid to drive until the declared disaster is lifted. She says, however, you may renew your license or Iowa-issued I-D at https://mymvd.iowadot.gov/Account/Login.
In addition, Rowley says the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will accept state driver’s licenses or I-D cards that have expired on or after March 1st, 2020, for those unable to renew at your state driver’s license agency. She says you should, however, check with TSA to make sure you can fly if yours is expired.
Also, she says if your vehicle registration expired January 31st, 2020 or later, it will be considered valid to drive in the state of Iowa until the declared disaster has ended.
Those who purchased or transferred a vehicle on or after February 16th, 2020 will not be required to obtain a title and registration within 30 days. Rowley says that measure will also remain in effect until the declared disaster is over. She says you should carry the purchase documents or bill of sale in your vehicle when driving until it has been transferred into your name and plated. She says the bill of sale will also be required at the Treasurer’s Office to complete the transfer.
Those who purchased a vehicle from a dealer on or after February 1st, 2020, will not be required to obtain license plates with 45 days. That provision will remain in effect until the declared disaster is over. Purchase documents, however, should be in your vehicle when driving until it is transferred into your name and plated.
On non-interstate roads only, trucks hauling food, medical supplies, cleaning products, or other household goods may exceed the weights listed in Iowa Code 321.463 by 12.5% without a permit, so long as they don’t exceed 20,000 pounds on an individual axel and their total weight does not exceed 90,000 pounds. Trucks are still required to obey posted bridge restrictions.
