Four Area Fire Departments Battle Large Field Fire

March 30, 2020

(Wallingford)– Four area fire departments battled a large field fire today (Monday) near Wallingford.

Wallingford Fire Chief Jarrod Fischer says firefighters were called shortly before 2:00 pm to 3971 240th Street southwest of Wallingford. Upon arriving they found the fire to be quickly spreading and was moving into neighboring grassland fields. Fire departments from Estherville, Graettinger and Terril were then called for assistance.

Fischer says the fire reached an adjoining farm site where it caught a building on fire that was already down.

Firefighters used tankers to help stop the fire and were able to keep it from jumping to other neighboring fields.

Firefighters managed to put the fire out after about three hours on the scene.

No injuries were reported.

It was one of several field and grass fires reported in the area today (Monday). Area Fire Chiefs urge anyone planning to do any open burning to use extreme caution. They say the danger of grass fires is very high right now, even with the recent rain. They add the dead vegetation quickly dries out. The say the fire danger is likely to remain until some additional rain falls and the vegetation starts to green up.
