(Undated)– The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced the REAL ID enforcement date is being pushed back a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new deadline for enforcement is October 1st, 2021.
The agency says it will publish a notice of the new deadline in the Federal Register in coming days.
DHS says states across the country, including Iowa, are temporarily closing or restricting access to DMVs, precluding many people from applying for and receiving REAL IDs.
The agency says extending the deadline will also allow them to work with Congress to implement needed to changes to expedite the issuance of REAL IDs once the current health crisis ends.
