Okoboji Schools to celebrate Respect Week March 2-8

Okoboji Schools will be partnering with Special Olympics during the first week of March to celebrate Respect Week through the Unified Champion Schools program, which promotes inclusion of students of all abilities in school activities.

Paraprofessional Kaylee Hinshaw explains.  “Special Olympics Iowa partners with schools throughout Iowa to unite student with and without disabilities for fun and friendship.  All students develop knowledge, acceptance and respect for one another when involved in unified activities and classes.”

Senior Sam Grems says, a number of activities are planned throughout the week.  “On Monday, we have the friendship bracelet making.  We make different bracelets that say respect or inclusion.  On Tuesday, we have the trail mix making, and they have different labels like your own inclusion trail mix.  on Wednesday we have the Tik Tok videos, a unified PE Tik Tok, and we’ll come up with all the dances and do them and it’ll be really fun.  On Thursday, we will take the Inclusion Pledge, and the Unified Cooking Class made cookies and during lunch, we’re going to serve that to the kids.  We all have Inclusion t-shirts that we’re going to be wearing that day, too.”
