Clay County Authorities Recover Stolen Vehicle; Suspect Taken Into Custody

February 25, 2020

(Spencer)– Authorities in Clay county have recovered a vehicle that was reported stolen Monday from Main Street in Peterson and a suspect has been taken into custody.

Authorities say the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee was reported stolen shortly after 9:30 am Monday.

Shortly after 6:30 this (Tues.) morning, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an individual who was following the stolen vehicle northbound in the 4800 mile of County Road M-27. A deputy located the Jeep turning onto 480th Street and attempted to stop the vehicle. It went into a field and collided with a deer, coming to rest near a tree line. The driver got out of the vehicle and fled on foot into a ravine where the deputy lost sight of the suspect. At about 8:15 am, the suspect, identified as Gary Stallings II, was seen coming out of the ravine. He was then captured and taken into custody.

Stallings was taken to the Clay county jail and was booked on charges of theft in the 2nd degree, eluding a peace officer and interference with official acts.

Stallings was also wanted on an O’Brien county warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of theft in the 5th degree.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement and the Clay County Conservation Office.
