(Spirit Lake)-Show and Jazz Choirs from across the Midwest are converging in Spirit Lake this weekend, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Spirit Lake Music Boosters are presenting The Third Annual Shake the Lakes Show and Jazz Choir Competition this weekend.
Club President Barb Fuelberth says the event brings in thousands of people to the area. “We’re really excited this year because we’ve got more big schools coming. We’ve got people actually coming from 5 states, people coming from Wisconsin and Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota as well as Iowa. We’re expecting about 1,200 students in the participating groups, which brings in about 4,000 people total into the school.”
She adds that the competition will kick off on Friday night. “We have 6 or 7 Middle School show choirs coming in to compete. Our Middle School Show Choir will also perform an exhibition, and they get a chance to work with judges and get some great comments. Then on Saturday morning we start with the High School show choirs and vocal jazz choirs and they compete all day until about 6 o’clock. Then we do an awards ceremony. From 7-11 pm, the best of the best get out there and perform their finals and we’ll have a grand champion, everybody gets a trophy and has a great time.”
She notes that the public is welcome to attend. “It’s $5 for Friday night, Saturday it’s $10 for adults, $5 for students and preschoolers are free.”
