D.O.T Commission Awards Funding For Local Rail To Trails Project At Meeting In Arnolds Park

September 11, 2019

(Arnolds Park)– The Iowa Transportation Commission approved $1.5 million for four state recreational trail projects at their meeting today (Tues.) in Arnolds Park.

One of those is a local rails to trail project. The third phase of what’s known as the “Tatonka Ska Trace Rail Trail” along some former railroad right-of-way between Spirit Lake and Lake Park was awarded $202,390.

The funding is through the State Recreational Trails Program created in 1988 with the purpose of developing and maintaining recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both motorized and non-motorized trail users.

The funding is available to cities, counties, state agencies, local governments and nonprofit organizations through an application-based program.
