(Lake Park)– Voters in the Harris-Lake Park school district head to the polls Tuesday, July 2nd to decide the fate of a four million dollar bond issue for a new 7-12 school in conjunction with a community complex and athletic fields to be built on the south side of Lake Park.
More than a hundred people attended a community meeting on the matter Monday evening.
Michael Gartner, chairman of the Vision Iowa Board, was among the guest speakers. 1.1 million dollars was awarded through the board’s Community Attraction and Tourism program. It hinges on the passage of the bond issue.
This marks the third attempt at passing the issue. But Gartner is confident of passage now that the state is dangling a carrot.
Some, however, aren’t as optimistic. A group known as “Protect Our Local Schools” opposes the bond issue.
The last bond issue election was held in December of last year. It received 54 approval…short of the 60 percent required under Iowa law. The measure was defeated by voters in the Harris area concerned over the possibility of the town losing its school.
