(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors Tuesday debated the pro’s and cons of dropping out of the flood plain ordinance. It was adopted during the 1993 flood to help property owners get assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Since then, many have complained the ordinance is causing them to go through a lot of red tape and expense in building or remodeling. They want the county to get rid of it.
Lynn Wallace was the county’s Civil Defense Director at the time. He told the supervisors Tuesday they should get some assurance from FEMA the county would still get assistance if it drops out of the flood program. In light of that concern, the supervisors Tuesday held off on deciding whether to repeal the ordinance. Instead, they held only the first reading of a proposal to do away with it. A second reading and possible adoption is set for their meeting next Tuesday.
The supervisors also Tuesday approved the ratification of a new contract with the bargaining unit representing some of the deputies, jailers and dispatchers in the Sheriff’s Office. They’ll be getting a four percent salary increase.
