(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors Tuesday got into another lengthy discussion about roads in East Okoboji Beach.
County Engineer Dan Eckert told the board it’s going to cost about 322-thousand dollars to pave Martin and Babbs streets; paving all other roads in the development is going to cost about 890-thousand dollars. Annual maintenance would be on top of that.
Eckert outlined two possible ways to pay for it: through a special assessment to adjoining property owners; or through a special assessment district which would assess the cost to anyone owning property up to a half mile of a given road to be improved. 50 percent of the residents in the affected area would need to sign a petition calling for the improvements.
Several East Okoboji Beach residents at Tuesday’s meeting said they want to meet with Assistant County Attorney Jon Bjornstad to get more information.
The residents want something done to improve the heavily traveled streets that are near a public access. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has agreed to pave one such street that leads directly to a public access.
