Milford Considers Development Requirements

November 23, 2014

(Milford)– The city of Milford is looking at adopting standards for developers.

The discussion stems from a preliminary plat the council considered Monday for a proposed development of 16 lots along “P” Avenue and an extension of 16th Street. The developer proposed double-sealcoated streets. That drew concern from council members…who feel the streets should be paved for longer life. The city will take them over once the development is complete. After further discussion, the council approved a planning and zoning commission recommendation to accept the preliminary plat without the streets. Those will be considered later. In the interim, the council set August 5th as the date for a special meeting to consider standards developers would have to meet in the future.

The council also accepted a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission to approve a preliminary plat for another phase of the South Shore Estates development on the south side of Lower Gar Lake consisting of 14 additional lots.

In other business, the council tabled a funding request from the Lakes Art Center. They need to raise an additional 350-thousand dollars to match a Community Attractions and Tourism Grant from Vision Iowa. Director Paula Henry requested the city contribute 50-thousand dollars. Several council members said the city simply wasn’t prepared to make a commitment right now. They’ll reconsider the request at their next regular meeting August 12th.

The Milford City Council also approved a request to close “H” Avenue between 9th and 10th streets August 25th for demonstrations of the fire department’s new extrication unit.
