SL Council Okays Land Swap Proposal

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday unanimously approved a land swap proposal between the city and GF Land Partnership of Spirit Lake.

In exchange for obtaining a parcel of land GF Land Partnership currently owns near 190th Avenue on Highways Nine and 71 on the west side of Spirit Lake, the city will deed some land it owns near the water tower on Zenith Avenue to GF Land Partnership, which wants another access to a building it owns in that area.

The city plans to put a welcome sign on the land it will acquire. Public Works Director Todd Dolphin says it will be similar to what’s on the city’s east side. Council members indicate Tuesday they want it designed so the sign will also honor the city’s 2004 state championship softball team.

In other business Tuesday, the council set September 14th at 5:30 p.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on a recommendation from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission to rezone some property in the area of the Gingham Inn from Highway Commercial to Light Industrial; they approved the appointment of Jeff Smith as the city’s representative on the Opportunity Is Calling Committee; and Mayor Eric Nielsen reported on last Friday’s meeting of the Public Safety Committee and the process of finding a new Police Chief. Nielsen said he wants as many people as possible involved, along with someone to head it up. The council reviewed but took no action on a proposal from Chuck Skogerboe, who assisted the city in previous Police Chief searches. Nielsen added the council will assist in the interviewing process.
