(Milford)– Iowa’s first lady is visiting public libraries in Dickinson county this week. Christie Vilsack says she’s visiting every public library in the state promoting her literacy foundation. Mrs. Vilsack says so far, 70 communities in the state have either finished or are now working on a literacy project.
Mrs. Vilsack also commented on the fact that only 15 percent of Iowa’s population is illiterate. But even that, she says, is too high. She says the segment of population that speaks English as a second language needs to be addressed. She says it’s up to communities to make sure they have the proper resources in place to help out those people. She says community colleges have been playing a vital role in that effort.
Another problem, Mrs. Vilsack says, is aliteracy, or people who know how to read, but for whatever reason don’t.
