Ia. Dept. Of Public Health Confirms West Nile In Dickinson Co.

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health have confirmed what’s been assumed all summer–that the West Nile Virus is indeed present again this summer in Dickinson county.

Mary Dunleavy of Dickinson County Public Health tells KUOO news a dead crow that was recently sent in to the state tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Now that the presence of the virus has been confirmed in Dickinson county, Dunleavy says residents no longer need to send in dead birds.

Dunleavy says it’s all the more proof that you need to continue to protect yourself from mosquitos when you’re outside…even though it’s late in the season. She says West Nile typically peaks in September, and that it will remain a threat until the first killing freeze.

Dunleavy recommends wearing long pants when you’re outside and to use an insect repellent that contains the chemical “deet”. She says you need to especially be cautious in the early morning and evening when mosquitos are most active.
