Spencer Man Dies In Three-County Pursuit

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A pursuit that went through three northwest Iowa counties this past weekend has resulted in the death of a Spencer man.

Authorities say 21-year-old James Sierck of Spencer died after he lost control of a vehicle on a gravel road a quarter of-a-mile east of the intersection with county roads B63 and N28 in Palo Alto county.

Authorities say they received a report shortly before 7:00 a.m. Saturday of a 1998 Chrysler that had been stolen from Sanborn and believed headed toward Spencer.

The vehicle was located shortly after 7:00 a.m. near the North “Y” and was followed into Spencer. Clay county sheriff’s deputies and Spencer police attempted to stop the vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot near Fourth Avenue southwest. The attempt resulted in Sierck ramming a Spencer police car. From there, the pursuit continued south onto Fourth Avenue Southwest and eventually onto Highway 71 south. It then went eastbound on county road B63 with Clay county deputies and Spencer police following.

The pursuit continued into Palo Alto county where Sierck lost control. The vehicle left the road and came to rest in a corn field on the north side of the road.

Sierck was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other persons were injured. No word on the extent of damage to the Spencer Police Department squad car.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
