(Spirit Lake)– Torrential rains from Monday evening through mid-morning Wednesday caused only minimal damage to Dickinson county roads.
That word from County Engineer Dan Eckert who documented information for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Eckert says most of the damage was the result of minor erosion that washed gravel away from roads. Eckert says 13 roads actually had water over them, but it wasn’t deep enough to warrant closing any of them.
Eckert estimates the damage at about 25-thousand dollars. He says most of that is replacement costs for the gravel and to repair some culverts.
Eckert attributes the relatively small amount of damage to the fact that the first several inches of rain that fell soaked into the ground, which was extremely dry. And he says the crop vegetation helped keep debris from clogging tile intakes.
7.61 inches of rain fell at the KUOO studios from Monday evening up until mid-morning Wednesday when the storms finally ended.
