Spencer Police Investigate Fairgrounds Break-Ins

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Spencer police are investigating several break-ins at the Clay County Fairgrounds.

Police Chief Mike Lashbrook says the break-ins occurred sometime Sunday night or early Monday.

The first report was received around 8:30 a.m. Monday regarding a break-in at the “K” Cafe. The vandals entered the building by breaking a window. Once inside they destroyed hundreds of apples and pumpkins the kiwanians were planning to sell. The fruit was destroyed and spread all over the inside of the building. A damage estimate wasn’t immediately available.

While investigating that break-in, police were notified by people working on the fairgrounds that other buildings were vandalized as well. Police discovered vandalism at the electrical building west of the grandstand; the storage room on the north side of the grandstand; and at the information building on the south side of the grandstand. Also the “Grandma’s Cookies” stand was broken into, but no damage was reported to the inside of that structure. The HyNoon Kiwanis-Stubs Cafe building was broken into. Vandals smashed a radio and dispensed a fire extinguisher in the building. Vandals broke into the Shrine Building and shattered a coffee pot. Break-ins were attempted at the Oak Tree Barbecue stand and police station on the fairgrounds, but vandals couldn’t kick in the doors.

Owners of the vandalized buildings have been contacted to make sure all the damage has been accounted for.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 262-2151.
