Harvest Progress Varies Greatly Across The Region

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– How is the harvest progressing? It depends on who you ask.

Paul Kassel, a Crops Specialist with the Iowa State University Extension Service, says the soybean harvest is nearly complete in some areas, while others are just getting a good start. He says there are many cases in which portions of the soybean crop had to be left in the field due to standing water.

The corn harvest is already well-underway in many areas, but there are places where it, too, is lagging. Kassel says some producers in the Spencer area were just getting a good start on it late last week. He says some producers are trying to decide whether to leave it in the field awhile yet in hopes of warmer weather and sunshine to help dry it down. That could be a gamble though in the event the weather should turn even colder and wetter. Kassel says he’s been hearing some excellent yields on corn that’s already been harvested, but he says it’s high in moisture content, meaning producers will have to spend more to dry it down.

Kassel expects most of the harvest should be wrapped up in another week or so if the weather holds.
