E’Ville Council Adopts Hotel-Motel Tax Resolutions

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– The Estherville city council Monday adopted two more resolutions related to next month’s special election on a proposed hotel-motel tax.

One resolution specifies the polling site for the April 10th election. In a cost-saving move, the council opted to go with just one polling site. Residents of all five precincts will vote at the Masonic Hall. City Administrator Steve Woodley estimated having just the one polling site will save about 700-dollars compared to having five sites.

The other resolution spells out how proceeds from the tax will be spent. If approved by voters, 50 percent would go to the Estherville Chamber of Commerce to develop, improve, promote and encourage tourism. The other 50 percent would be retained by the city for capital improvement projects along with parks and recreation projects.

The resolution contains a provision requiring the chamber to provide the city council annual reports on lodging tax revenue and how it was spent.

Dusty Heland, Director of the Estherville Chamber of Commerce, says now that the preliminaries are out of the way, the next step is to educate the public in the days leading up to the election.
