(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county is the proud owner of a stretch of what used to be Highway 71 in the Maywood area of West Okoboji.
County Engineer Dan Eckert told the board of supervisors Tuesday the Iowa Department of Transportation has transferred jurisdiction of the road to the city of West Okoboji.
Under Iowa law, cities with a population of five hundred or less don’t have to take over the roads. Instead, they can pass them on to the county. That’s the case in this instance.
Under the transfer, the state will pay the county six-thousand dollars a year the next 10 years to help offset maintenance costs.
Eckert told the supervisors he’s working on a 28E snow removal agreement with the city of West Okoboji. But a more significant issue, Eckert says, will be the cost of any future upgrades to the road. He said the city of West Okoboji will soon be requesting the county make 150-thousand dollars in improvements to the road.
In other business Tuesday, supervisors set December 14th at 9:30 a.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on an urban renewal plan proposed for West Bay Estates on Silver Lake near Lake Park; approved a request to rezone land southwest of Milford owned by the Boles and Nordblad families from agriculture to residential; and they approved a preliminary plat for a subdivision on the same land known as “Great Oaks Subdivision”.
