(Spirit Lake)– One of Spirit Lake’s most historic buildings may soon have some new life.
Meeting in special session today (Thurs.), the city council voted four-to-one to adopt a resolution supporting a project to rennovate the former Antler’s Hotel.
Under the resolution, the city will provide 115-thousand dollars to assist Community Housing Initiatives and the Troyka Group in the project. It also calls for the city to provide 14 spaces in the existing city parking lot on the side of the former hotel.
Councilman Jerry Harbst cast the lone dissenting vote.
Doug LaBounty of Community Housing Initiatives says the project will consist of 14 apartment units on the upper two floors of the building with commercial retail spaces remaining on the lower two floors.
LaBounty says they’re in the process of applying for funding for the project, which has a total estimated cost of three million dollars.
LaBounty says while the inside of the building will be completely gutted and restored to its former splendor, the same will be true for the building’s exterior. He says they’re working off historic photos of the building and plan to restore a second-floor canopy balcony.
If things go accordingly, construction would start this coming Summer with completion slated for late 2006.
