(Superior)– Cattle rustling is apparently alive and well in Dickinson county.
Authorities are investigating the disappearance of five show cattle from a farm near Superior. They belong to 15-year-old Justin Garrelts of Superior who was planning to show the four Maine Anjou heifers and a steer at 4-H fairs and events. The cattle had been registered with 4-H officials who took D-N-A samples and nose prints.
Justin and his father, Mark, say they last saw the cattle January 2nd. The animals were reported missing from their stall in a barn the next day. A guard dog that watches the cattle was badly beaten.
Mark Garrelts believes the thieves knew the cattle were for show, as 700 cattle in an adjoining feedlot weren’t touched.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t believe the missing cattle will be found.
