(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council voted unanimously Tuesday to enter into an engineering agreement with the Howard R. Green firm to come up with plans for a new water tower to replace the existing one near the High School. The agreement will cost the city 102-thousand dollars which will cover the design of the new tower, bidding and services through construction.
The council approved a Public Safety Committee recommendation to increase the amount charged to the city of Orleans for law enforcement from a thousand dollars a month currently to 1,200; and they voted unanimously to place a 10-year moratorium on any involuntary annexation of the Pioneer Beach area. It may be a moot point though as the Dickinson county board of supervisors earlier Tuesday voted to support Orleans’ voluntary annexation of the same area.
The council tabled action on a request to sell a dead-end portion of 11th Street east of Fargo Avenue. Councilman Jerry Harbst said the city should review similar dead-ends in the city…many of which contain public accesses…before it starts selling them off piece-meal.
The council also unanimously voted in favor of having the state prosecute tobacco violations filed against three Spirit Lake businesses instead of getting the city involved. That means any fines collected will go to the state instead of the city.
The council also unanimously adopted a resolution establishing a credit card policy for city employees. Among other things, the city was cited in a state audit for not having such a policy on the books.
