(Estherville)– Iowa Lakes Community College’s new wind turbine is officially in operation.
College officials say the blades started turning at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Technicians were onsite throughout the day Tuesday and Wednesday making final adjustments and connections.
The 230-foot tall turbine was erected earlier this month. Blades on the turbine extend to 375-feet. The turbine generates about 1.2 megawatts of electricity per hour.
The Wind Energy and Turbine Technology Program at Iowa Lakes Community College was started in the fall of 2004. The program leads to a two-year Associate in Science Degree.
The program’s instructor, Al Zeitz, most recently worked at the wind farm in the Peterson/Alta/Storm Lake area.
ILCC’s wind turbine is located on South 19th Street in Estherville…a few blocks south of the college’s main campus.
