(Spencer)– An Everly man is recovering after striking a train west of Spencer earlier this week.
The collision happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday at the railroad crossing on 180th Avenue, about a half-mile north of Clay County Road B-24.
Authorities say 20-year-old Thomas Fliss of Everly was southbound on 180th Avenue when he failed to see the train in time, slammed on his brakes and slid about 195 feet on the icy roadway before striking the side of the eastbound train. Fliss was deflected into the east ditch.
Fliss was transported by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. He was treated and released. No injuries were reported to the engineer of the train, Craig Dwine of Mason City.
Fliss was driving a 1989 Dodge Neon which sustained four thousand dollars in damage. Damage to the train was estimated at 500-dollars.
