(Estherville)– Two people were given special recognition at Friday evening’s commencement exercises at Iowa Lakes Community College.
A long-time legislator and friend of the college was awarded an honorary degree. Senator John P. “Jack” Kibbie received an Associate in Arts Degree from Dr. Harold Prior, College President-Designate. Senator Kibbie has been a long-time supporter of Iowa Lakes and is often called the ‘father of community colleges’ because he sponsored legislation which founded community colleges in Iowa 40 years ago.
Also honored Friday evening was Linda Heldt of Estherville. She was awarded the Jim Hall Outstanding Alumnus Award by Marian Brunsvold, Alumni Board President. The honor is given annually to an individual who has shown exceptional support for the college and demonstrated superior career development. Heldt is the Athletic Office Assistant at Iowa Lakes.
Two students served as the featured speakers for the evening. Mary Hinshaw of Arnolds Park received an Associate Degree in Nursing. Chris Mugge of Spencer is part of the first class of students receiving an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Wind Energy and Turbine Technology.
Following the ceremonies, the nursing students returned to the gymnasium with their families for a ‘pinning’ ceremony. It’s been more than a decade since ADN and PN students participated in that event.
Some 260 students participated in the commencement exercises. Nearly 400 students are in the Spring of 2006 graduating class at Iowa Lakes.
