(Spirit Lake)– A special program that educates youth on proper boating skills is coming to the Iowa Great Lakes.
Patrick Rice is with the Spirit of America Foundation…a pilot program founded in 1995 in Lake county, Ohio. The organization has educated over four thousand students and their families on the importance of boating and water safety. Rice says they’re offering the program locally in conjunction with Camp Foster YMCA. He says the hands-on program, intended primarily for seventh and eighth grade students, will begin June 2nd and run through June 13th.
Rice says the training will include all types of watercraft, from canoes and kayaks to speed boats and personal watercraft.
The program is offered free of charge thanks to a grant from the U-S Coast Guard, but the class size is limited to 48 students.
For more information and to pre-register, call Camp Foster at 336-3272, extension 234.
