Long Time Lakes Area Resident & Businessman Pronounced Dead After Crash

(Okoboji)– A long time lakes area resident and businessman was pronounced dead following a crash late Saturday afternoon in Okoboji.

The Iowa State Patrol says 78-year-old Don Ahrens of Okoboji was southbound on Highway 71 at Lakeshore Drive when he crossed the center line and hit a street sign on the east side of the highway. The vehicle continued on, colliding with a fire hydrant and two stoplight poles before coming to rest in the northbound lane south of the intersection.

Ahrends was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities aren’t saying if he died as a result of the crash or if suffered a medical condition.

A 1996 Cadillac Ahrends was driving sustained an estimated 15-thousand dollars in damage.

The mishap took place around 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted on the scene by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Okoboji, Arnolds Park, Milford and Spirit Lake Police Departments along with the Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance and Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire and Rescue.
