Dickinson Supervisors Resume Debate Over Proposed Noise Ordinance

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– More discussion at Tuesday’s Dickinson county board of supervisors meeting about a possible noise ordinance for unincorporated areas of the county.

Supervisor Paul Johnson continued his push for such an ordinance, saying it isn’t fair for a neighbor’s racket to negatively affect adjoining landowner’s property values and quality of life.

Supervisor Mardi Allen reiterated her concern that it doesn’t appear such an ordinance would be targeted for a specific business or industry, saying she hopes it isn’t intended to do away with all outdoor entertainment.

Johnson retorted, saying money and tourism shouldn’t come before the environment. Allen fired back, saying that isn’t what she meant in her comment.

After further discussion, the supervisors directed Assistant County Attorney Lonnie Saunders to research any cases in which noise ordinances have been contested to the supreme court; and research will be done to see which Iowa counties have noise ordinances on the books.

Currently, two cities in Dickinson county, Arnolds Park and Okoboji, have noise ordinances in effect.
