Dickinson Supervisors Approve Theatre Re-Zoning

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Plans to build a drive-in movie theatre near the Jackson “Y” west of Superior cleared another hurdle Tuesday.

The Dickinson county board of supervisors voted five-to-nothing in favor of a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to rezone 10 acres of land in the southwest corner of Superior Township from Agricultural to Highway Commercial. A public hearing drew no opposition.

The project has one more hurdle to clear before it can become a reality. The re-zoning is contingent upon the county’s Board of Adjustment granting a condition use permit allowing for an outdoor entertainment use in that area. The Board of Adjustment will take up the matter February 26th.

Gaylord Kemp of Kemp Enterprises of Alpha, Minnesota wants to build the theatre. He says the screen for it would be moved from the former drive-in theatre on the west edge of Estherville.
