November 22, 2014

(Sioux City)– A former Spirit Lake resident has been sentenced to more than 18 years in federal prison for failing to appear in April, 2003 for a plea hearing in federal court on conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine charges.

The sentence against 45-year-old Mario Janssen was handed down last week.

Janssen pleaded guilty on December 8th of last year to charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, having been previously convicted of a felony drug offense.

He also pled guilty to a charge of failure to appear stemming from his failure to appear at a plea hearing April 17th, 2003.

Janssen was arrested in May of last year in Missouri.

In addition to the prison term, Janssen must also serve a five-year term of supervised release.

Janssen is being held in the custody of a U-S Marshal until he can be transported to a federal prison.
