Dickinson Co. Road Crew Commended For Extra Work During Blizzard

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors Tuesday commended the county’s secondary road crew for its hard work both during and after last week’s blizzard.

County Engineer Dan Eckert was out of town for a seminar, but in an e-mail he told supervisors plow operators made several emergency runs–including one to get additional formula for an infant.

In his e-mail, Eckert says plow operators worked the entire weekend–from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Eckert went on to say it could still be a couple of days before roads that don’t have anyone living along them are opened.

Eckert says crews are now pushing back huge piles of snow at intersections.

Meanwhile the amount of hours county road crews are putting in are mounting. Over the past several weeks, Eckert says they’ve logged nearly 400 hours in overtime and 82 hours in compensatory time.

Eckert says his budget remains in pretty good shape, but he says the wear and tear on equipment is starting to catch up.

Last week’s blizzard dumped 13 inches of snow on the Iowa Great Lakes. There’s a total of 19 inches on the ground.
