Midwest Wireless Announces Major Job Cuts; Some Stores To Close

November 22, 2014

(Mankato, Mn.)– Big job cuts were announced Wednesday at Mankato, Minnesota-based Midwest Wireless.

The carrier’s parent company says it’s cutting 150 people from the Midwest Wireless payroll–mostly in Mankato but also in Iowa and Wisconsin. The cuts come from the Midwest Wireless finance, legal and marketing departments. The jobs will be eliminated by September.

Alltel Corporation officials say they’ll keep 450 jobs at the Midwest Wireless headquarters. Most of those are in sales, customer service, and networking technicians.

As part of the changes, Alltel officials say they’ll add sales staff to support customers. But Alltel, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, says it also will close about ten of the Midwest Wireless stores this summer.

Alltel completed its purchase of Midwest Wireless last fall, paying just over one billion dollars for the Makato company to become the nation’s fifth largest wireless network.
