(Estherville)– An investigation is underway into a fish kill at Twelve Mile Lake in Emmet county.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says about a thousand dead bullheads and 100 minnows were found on the southeast side of the lake Tuesday.
DNR officials aren’t saying whether or not it was a factor, but the dead fish were found not far from where manure runoff was entering the lake.
They say the run-off is coming from contaminated snowmelt from a 500 head cattle feedlot on the southeast side of Twelve Mile Lake.
DNR officials say no controls are in place to keep the manure out of the lake, but they say the feedlot owner has placed strawbales to try to reduce the amount of manure getting into the lake.
The DNR says it will continue to investigate and may consider enforcement action.
