Rivers Crest, Levels Begin To Recede

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– Good news when it comes to flooding in the area. The National Weather Service says most rivers have crested and the levels are beginning to recede.

The one exception is the West Fork of the Des Moines River. Ice jams continue to cause rapid fluctuations in levels…especially in south-central Emmet county.

Flood warnings remain in effect for the Little Sioux River near Milford, Spencer, Linn Grove and Cherokee; the Rock River near Rock Rapids and Rock Valley; the Ocheyedan River near Spencer and the West Fork of the Des Moines River near Windom, Minnesota.

Hydrologists say levels should continue to drop barring any major precipitation. No major rainfall is in the forecast through early next week, when most rivers are expected to drop below flood stage.

The longer range outlook, however, isn’t as good. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a long-range outlook today (Thurs.) that says flooding could be an issue in the upper midwest April through June due to predictions for above normal rainfall and saturated soils.
