Farmers Wait Anxiously For Fieldwork To Start

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– There’s one group of people especially thankful for the recent improvement in the weather–it’s area farmers.

Paul Kassel, a Crops Specialist with the Iowa State University Extension Service, drying conditions the past several days have been ideal, and that if the weather holds, some fieldwork in the area may finally get underway toward the end of the week.

Even though field work is late getting started, Kassel says there isn’t reason to be concerned just yet. He says there shouldn’t be any problems as long as corn is planted by about May 5th.

And while this is the latest in recent years for spring field work, Kassel says there have been years where it was even later. He uses 1991 and 1993 as examples when essentially nothing was done until about mid-May.
