(Spencer)– A type of racing never seen before at the Clay County Fair is coming this September.
Phil Hurst, Secretary/Manager of the Clay County Fair, announced Monday the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Tour will race at this year’s fair, Wednesday, September 12th.
Hurst announced the fair and CDR Promotions of Princeton, Minnesota inked a 10-year deal to bring the World of Outlaws to Spencer. To do that, though, Hurst says some major improvements have to be made to the track. That includes shortening the track from a half-mile to three-eighths; new fencing; new lights; removal of some trees; replacing dirt on the track with clay; and drainage work…all at a combined estimated cost of 250-thousand dollars.
Hurst said racing at the Clay County Fair had reached a critical crossroads. He said it was a matter of either making the improvements and getting the World of Outlaws to come, or scrapping racing altogether at the fair, saying the racing facility had become an embarrassment.
Hurst says the World of Outlaws will also bring a new crowd of people to the fair.
