(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake voters will head to the polls later this summer to decide whether or not to change how proceeds from the Local Option Sales Tax are allocated.
The city council Tuesday adopted a resolution calling for the special election, which will likely be scheduled for August 14th.
City Administrator Mark Stevens says if approved, the city would have more flexibility over how it can use Local Option Sales Tax money. Currently, 40 percent is used for property tax relief and 60 percent for capital projects. If voters approve of the measure, the city would still use 40 percent for property tax relief, but the other 60 percent would be used for general city purposes.
