(Spirit Lake)– Two properties in Okoboji that are on the southern end of Drainage District 22 are being put on notice by the city of Spirit Lake, which has jurisdiction over the district.
The Spirit Lake city council, meeting in special session today (Fri.) as commissioners of the district, directed attorney Greg Owen to send a letter to the developer of Trailview Estates Condominiums and the Cinema 7 Theatre advising them they need to take steps to address what commissioners say is excessive run-off and silt coming from those properties.
Commissioners also approved spending not to exceed six thousand dollars to put some rock in an area near where the drainage ditch flows into East Lake Okoboji to slow the velocity of the water, which is threatening to undermine the foundation of a garage in that area.
Engineer Rick Hopper was also authorized to get cost estimates on options to deepen and expand a detention pond in that same area.
Saying they would like another engineer to evaluate the drainage system, commissioners also directed City Administrator Mark Stevens to get quotes from engineering firms.
The actions are being prompted by a large amount of silt that washed into East Lake Okoboji from the Drainage District 22 outlet following a three and-a-half inch rain that fell earlier this month.
