Spencer Man Hospitalized After Being Assaulted With A Sword

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A Spencer man is hospitalized after an early morning assault in the 700 block of First Avenue Southeast in Spencer.

Spencer police say they were called to that location around 2:30 a.m. this (Friday) morning. Officials say the victim, a 26-year-old man, had his hand cut by a sword.

A suspect in the case, 24-year-old Keith Riordan of Spencer, was arrested and charged with willful injury…a class “C” felony.

Police obtained a search warrant for Riordan’s residence at 724 First Avenue Southeast. They eventually recovered the sword at a residence on East Park Street.

Riordan is being held in the Clay county jail on 13-thousand dollars bond.

The victim, who’s name hasn’t been released, is being treated at Spencer Municipal Hospital.

Authorities say a disagreement over Riordan’s phone number allegedly being given out was the motive for the assault.

Spencer police say their investigation continues and more arrests are possible.
