Iowa Great Lakes American Red Cross Celebrates 90 Years

(Spencer)– This year marks a milestone for the local Red Cross chapter.

Today (June 6th) is the 90th anniversary of the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross.

What was then the Clay County Chapter of the American Red Cross was formed in 1917. In 1964 a merger took place incorporating Clay, Dickinson and Emmet counties to become the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross. It would later grow to encompass Palo Alto, Pocahontas and Kossuth counties as well.

The Iowa Great Lakes Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will celebrate its 90th anniversary with an open house at its new location at the Gateway North Mall in Spencer this coming Tuesday, June 12th from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Punch, coffee and cookies will be served.

The Spencer Chamber of Commerce will hold its “Business After Hours” at the Red Cross offices that same day beginning at 5:00 p.m.
