Electrical Malfunction Said To Be Cause Of Garage Fire

November 22, 2014

(Lake Park)– An electrical malfunction has been ruled as the probable cause of a garage fire early this (Fri.) morning in Lake Park.

Lake Park Fire Chief Brandon Ehret tells KUOO news firefighters were call to the Todd and Annette Benson residence at 101 West Third Street around 2:00 a.m.

Upon arriving, Ehret says flames could be seen coming from the northwest corner of a double garage attached to a two-story house.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the garage, which is a total loss, along with several items inside it…including two vehicles. Ehret says it took about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

He says the Bensons were home at the time and were awakened by their dog.

No injuries were reported.

An investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire started near a workbench and that it was probably caused by an electrical problem with a power strip that had several items plugged into it.

Damage is estimated at more than 50-thousand dollars.

Lake Park firefighters were on the scene about four and-a-half hours.
