Clay County Traffic Stop Leads To Pot Discovery

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A weekend traffic stop has resulted in drug charges against a Hartley man.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday and noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from it.

A subsequent search turned up some drug paraphernalia and a quarter of-a-pound of what’s alleged to be marijuana.

A passenger, 30-year-old David Lee Engelkes of Hartley, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver…a class “C” felony; a drug tax stamp violation…also a class “D” felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia…a simple misdemeanor.

Engelkes was booked into the Clay county jail on nearly 20-thousand dollars bond.

Authorities say the investigation continues and additional charges are expected.
