(Spirit Lake)– A chemical reaction has been determined as the cause of a fire that damaged a garage Tuesday night at a residence on West Lake Okoboji.
Spirit Lake Fire Chief David Kollasch says firefighters were called to the Dan Block residence at 15588 Landings Avenue in the harbor around 11:00 p.m. after getting a report of smoke in a garage.
Kollasch says the residents of the house were awakened when a smoke detector started going off. He says they used a garden hose and had the fire put out by the time firefighters arrived, but there was a considerable amount of smoke in the garage…where the fire was contained.
The occupants were able to remove two vehicles from the garage.
Kollasch says it appears some chemical on a plastic table resulted in a chemical reaction, which started the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were on the scene about an hour.
