(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday approved a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to rezone land for the proposed Iowa Great Lakes Towne Center Project north of the Stables from Agricultural to Highway Commercial.
The action followed a public hearing that drew concerns over possible environmental and drainage impacts.
David Stein, Jr., a Milford attorney speaking on behalf of developer Martin Benskin, says Benskin has agreed to follow DNR storm water management guidelines, which the city is considering adopting as a requirement for future projects.
Neither Stein nor Benskin would comment as to what types of businesses may be locating in the development, saying there “will be ample opportunity for city administration, the Planning and Zoning Commission and city council to have some say over what goes in.”
Benskin told KUOO news he hopes to start moving dirt on the site in late August or early September.
