Dickinson Co. Supervisors Vote To Send Letter Opposing Annexation Proposal

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– With one abstention and two members absent, the Dickinson county board of supervisors this (Tues.) morning voted to send a letter to the State Development Board announcing they intend to fight a proposed annexation of 13.3 acres of land between Bay Rym Condminiums and Pikes Point State Park into the city of Okoboji.

While the letter states the county’s intent to fight the proposed voluntary annexation, it does not list specific reasons behind its opposition. Those will be included in a formal resolution the supervisors will act on later.

Supervisor Chairman David Gottsche was absent for this (Tues.) morning’s meeting due to a family emergecy; supervisor Pam Jordan, who’s out of town, voted via telephone hook up. Because he lives in the city of Okoboji, supervisor Paul Johnson sited a conflict of interest and abstained from voting.

Assistant County Attorney Lonnie Saunders, who represents the supervisors on various legal issues, also cited a conflict of interest, saying any consultation would need to come from someone else in the County Attorney’s Office.

The area being proposed for annexation has a taxable valuation of roughly 22.5 million dollars. Prospects of losing out on that aren’t sitting well with county and township officials.
