(Spirit Lake)—Voters in Spirit Lake today(Tuesday.) approved a measure that will allow the city to change how proceeds from a portion of the Local Option Sales Tax are spent.
The change will allow the city to use the 60 percent of the proceeds originally earmarked for capital improvement projects for general fund obligations. The 40 percent portion of the tax proceeds earmarked for property tax relief will stay the same.
While voters approved the change, it was far from a landslide. According to unofficial results from the Dickinson County Auditor’s Office, 111 voted in favor of the change while 71 voted against it.
City officials say the change should help ease some of the constraints on the General Fund.
