(Okoboji)– A natural gas line that was accidentally cut Wednesday in Okoboji resulted in the evacuation of serveral residents on Lakeshore Drive and closed down a portion of the street.
Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Yungbluth says it happened shortly before 1:00 p.m. when a landscaping crew accidentally hit a three-quarter inch high pressure steel gas line between 2311 and 2313 Lakeshore Drive.
Officials say the sound of escaping gas could be heard from a couple blocks away and the gas could be smelled from as far away as Highway 71.
Firefighters responded to the scene and stood by about three hours while crews with Aquila brought it under control. Residents were then allowed to return and the street was re-opened.
Fortunately Youngbluth says the gas did not ignite and there were no injuries.
