(Undated)– Expect to see an increase in law enforcement on the road beginning today (Friday) and continuing through the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.
A number of law enforcement agencies throughout the region are participating in a special traffic enforcement program, or sTEP.
Randy Hunefeld, sTEP Coordinator with the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, says the theme for this particular effort is “Over the Limit. Under Arrest.”
Hunefeld says the goal is to further the focus of getting drunk or impaired drivers off the road.
During the last sTEP wave over the Fourth of July, participating agencies made 285 contacts with alcohol or drug impaired drivers. They wrote up 1,473 safety belt violations; 3,797 speeding violations; 308 stop sign or traffic signal violations and made a total of 10,242 enforcement contacts. Officers assisted 707 motorists and apprehended 145 wanted persons along with making 22 felony and 102 narcotics arrests during that period.
The next sTEP wave will be over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday period.
