Governor Issues Disaster Declaration For Palo Alto, 5 Other Counties

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– Governor Chet Culver has issued a disaster declaration for six counties, including two in northwest Iowa, due to recent heavy rains and flooding.

The declaration is for Palo Alto and Pocahontas counties in northwest Iowa along with Boone, Humboldt, Calhoun and Webster counties in north central Iowa.

The declaration allows state resources to be deployed to assist communities in those counties.

It also automatically triggers Iowa’s new individual disaster assistance program for low income residents. Those in the affected counties with household incomes of up to 133 percent of federal poverty guidelines may apply for a grant of up to 3,300-dollars to help recover from flood damage. Applicants must provide receipts when applying for the assistance. More information is available at dhs.iowa.gov.

In addition, Culver says Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division officials have activated the State Emergency Operations Center in Johnston. He says state agencies are present there to ensure all state resources are available for the affected counties.
